[http://www.flickr.com/photos/midori_no_saru] You have it in a nut shell ; don’t think they’d even allow the gloves these days! Well said.
Does remind of of how devoted those folk were to get the shot – note the string shutter box release, which I’d guess he had made himself by the looks of it.
bear in mind he was focussing upside down on a dim ground glass with the image reversed left to right; and we moan if the face recognition doesn’t lock on straight away! In his left pocket would be the convenient 10" by 7" or thereabout slides in dark holders, weighing less than a kilogram each, his version of an SD card. Looking at the pocket I’d say he only has two at most, no gigabyte thrombosis there then….
Look at the pictures Ponting took, and where and when he took them. Make no mistake – he’s a hero. Definitely.
docu on BBC iplayer, about preserving scotts hut has 3 days to run
now thats one hell of a vintage camera.
How did he process the photos? I bet the batteries in his laptop ran down real quick in that cold.
los comienzos de la fotogragfia que grande fueron, un saludo y gracia por compartirla
Hi Very good old camera, good picture.
It reminds me of that : http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=awq90APEVgw
Are you sure this wasn’t in the 1st World War?
[http://www.flickr.com/photos/fabricovisual] Caption says ‘1912’. First World War was 1914-1918. So no. (Though perhaps you were making a joke like some of the other comments that the camera looks like an old machine gun.)
这样的神器~表示压力很大 1912年啊 我爷爷还没有出生啊
This picture should make us understand that the medium format is stunning in terms of photo quality ..
I wonder what is the picture he captured there? do you have it?
Great shot !
this image has to be infinitely more interesting than whatever it was he was attempting to photograph
magnifico!!
What is he shooting ??
Snow?
[http://www.flickr.com/photos/_visualflux_] [http://www.flickr.com/photos/12306079@N02] For shame, folks – this guy Ponting is historically one of the truly famous great early expedition photographers working in incredibly difficult conditions with cumbersome apparatus most of us wouldn’t even dream of trying to use in our back yards on a summer’s afternoon, in these days of computerised miniaturised digital equipment. "Snow?" – have look at the photos he actually took with this gear, like those elsewhere in the same Flickr archive, some of them all-time classics like this one: flic.kr/p/7doxMR (now viewed over 21,000 times in Flickr alone).
Wow ;))

Nice photo 🙂

I thought it’s a machine gun. At any rate, the f-number of the lens couldn’t be very low, so I guess it was for static sceneries only.
He is SHOOTING Photos! 😀
como cambian los tiempos…
énorme !
Fantastic

Amazing shot.
the real CANnON.
"You may fire when ready, Gridley"
He was a pioneer. He was a member of Captain Scott Antartic expeditions and took amazing shots in extreme conditions. Not only he documented the expedition itself but he took some wonderful pictures of unknown countries with a great talent for composition. Remember this was one hundred years ago !
I love this photo!

Ho-ho-ho! Great comments people. To paraphrase one of you, if the face recognition dosen’t lock on you think your dick has dropped off.
Well, he processed them in a log cabin which he had to BUILD FIRST. There was a tempreture difference of 112 degrees between the inside and the outside, Many of the first COLOUR plates broke due to the extremes. He also took a 16mm hand cranked cine camera, which was also big and clumsey. All of which were dragged across the snow and ice with just a hope that it all might work.
Why didn’t he just load an XD card into his DSLR and….
oh yea….
咁先係正式攝影大家吖嘛!Now that’s a photographer!
