Magnificent Millinery
This elegantly behatted group are Mr Murphy of Prior Park, Clonmel, Co. Tipperary and sister(s) perhaps…
Looks as if this was Thomas Murphy, a brewer, and that one of the elegant ladies was his sister, Amy Isabel because blackpoolbeach found them on Prior Park Road in the 1901 census.
Sadly, Niall McAuley discovered that Amy Isabel Murphy died when the R.M.S. Leinster was torpedoed in October 1918.

Twins?
[http://www.flickr.com/photos/eyelightfilms] The two sisters? Or sister and brother twins?
Just to kick off, here is a Murphy family in Prior Park Road, Clonmel
http://www.census.nationalarchives.ie/pages/1901/Tipperary/Clonm...
Thomas MURPHY, 33, Head of Family, Brewer, Not Married
Amy Isabel MURPHY, 34, Sister, Not Married
isn’t it weird back then to have a 30 years old person not being married? Just saying…
blackpoolbeach …… census data and photo data ! impressive
[http://www.flickr.com/photos/tj_q8] Perhaps he didn’t enjoy the society of women. Or maybe he was spectacularly irritating.
[http://www.flickr.com/photos/8468254@N02] lol ….. *rolls eyes and whistles*
[http://www.flickr.com/photos/blackpoolbeach] So thank you, Thomas Murphy then! But wonder which is Anny Isabel?
[http://www.flickr.com/photos/tj_q8] Not especially, I don’t think! Have vague memories from History lectures that Irish people married relatively late in life (late 19th/early 20th century)…
Amy Isabel and her mother died on the Leinster when it was torpedoed in 1918.
[http://www.flickr.com/photos/8468254@N02] you could have a point there, he’s certainly not sitting too close to his big sister in any case. [http://www.flickr.com/photos/nlireland] It would not have been unusual for better off people to marry later in life especially when they were in "business" and then matches were often arranged to "suitable" young ladies/gentlemen. In other words money marrying money or even poverty marrying poverty;-)
Truly the three are very elegant and beautifully turned out, the height of fashion.
[http://www.flickr.com/photos/gnmcauley] Just missed your post Niall, here we have a tragedy in front of us, how very sad? RIP
[http://www.flickr.com/photos/nlireland] hmm I heard Irish people Now do marry early 🙂
did you notice that waist line on the sitting lady? I think I would be almost able to grasp it with one hand!
They lived in Prior Park, later the home of the of the O’Gorman’s, unless I am very much mistaken, which I highly doubt, if you folly me drift:
[http://www.flickr.com/photos/gnmcauley] St. Niall the Infallible:-)))
Murphy’s brewery, Dowd’s Lane Clonmel, on the OS 25" map.
What a super photograph! I love the detail in those clothes!
[http://www.flickr.com/photos/gnmcauley] Great wee bit of research!
[http://www.flickr.com/photos/swordscookie] Weren’t these photos so heavily staged that you did not get to choose where you sat?
In 1911 census, Prior Park is occupied by John M. Murthy, brewer and transcription error, aged 39. Thomas’s younger brother, maybe?
ancestry.com suggests:
Benjamin Murphy
Eliza Jane Fennell
Adelaide Mary Murphy
Amy Isabel Murphy
George Fennell Murphy
John Malcolmson Murphy
Mary Violet Murphy
Thomas Murphy
Which would make the other sister Mary Violet or Adelaide Mary.
Brilliant work, [http://www.flickr.com/photos/gnmcauley] but very sad about Miss Amy Isabel. Wasn’t expecting that…
This could be Adelaide Mary, now a Hogan (born in Tipperary) in the 1901 census.
If so, she’s younger than the other two.
[http://www.flickr.com/photos/vab2009] You’re quire right Viv, I was writing tongue in cheek! Isn’t this an incredible insight into a family and a national tragedy almost 100 years later. I just love this photostream and the people who make it all so interesting.
[http://www.flickr.com/photos/swordscookie] And even if they weren’t staged, a hatred of big sisters lasting into adulthood is perfectly normal.
Guess would be the older Amy sitting and the back, and the younger Adelaide (if that’s who she is) sitting at the front?
I think it is more likely that Adelaide, being married in Dublin, is not here, and that this is Mary Violet.
[http://www.flickr.com/photos/gnmcauley] Fair point…
Fantastic history evolving from one photo!
stunning photo for your collection!
I haven’t checked in in a while, but this is the perfect day to return!
[http://www.flickr.com/photos/la_belle_province] Deliberately put Millinery in the title to entice you! 🙂
[http://www.flickr.com/photos/la_belle_province/] Great to see you back La Belle, I meant to stop by and ask after you but summer was as hectic as it was miserable here.
stunting shot
interesting to note that in the census provided by blackpoolbeach, the Murphy’s do not say what religion they are. agnostics maybe??
Looking back and seeing the woman on the right with the (enforced) "tiny waist", it almost defies physics-how tight was that corset?
Buen trabajo.
[http://www.flickr.com/photos/51719102@N05] Well it defies biology, anyway.
The Irish certainly are good looking.
Respect,.!!!
[http://www.flickr.com/photos/nlireland] [http://www.flickr.com/photos/swordscookie] Oh golly, I missed you too!
Beautiful family photograph.
