Magnificent Millinery

Magnificent Millinery

This elegantly behatted group are Mr Murphy of Prior Park, Clonmel, Co. Tipperary and sister(s) perhaps…

Looks as if this was Thomas Murphy, a brewer, and that one of the elegant ladies was his sister, Amy Isabel because blackpoolbeach found them on Prior Park Road in the 1901 census.

Sadly, Niall McAuley discovered that Amy Isabel Murphy died when the R.M.S. Leinster was torpedoed in October 1918.

isn’t it weird back then to have a 30 years old person not being married? Just saying…

[http://www.flickr.com/photos/tj_q8] Not especially, I don’t think! Have vague memories from History lectures that Irish people married relatively late in life (late 19th/early 20th century)…

[http://www.flickr.com/photos/8468254@N02] you could have a point there, he’s certainly not sitting too close to his big sister in any case. [http://www.flickr.com/photos/nlireland] It would not have been unusual for better off people to marry later in life especially when they were in "business" and then matches were often arranged to "suitable" young ladies/gentlemen. In other words money marrying money or even poverty marrying poverty;-)
Truly the three are very elegant and beautifully turned out, the height of fashion.

did you notice that waist line on the sitting lady? I think I would be almost able to grasp it with one hand!

They lived in Prior Park, later the home of the of the O’Gorman’s, unless I am very much mistaken, which I highly doubt, if you folly me drift:

What a super photograph! I love the detail in those clothes!
[http://www.flickr.com/photos/gnmcauley] Great wee bit of research!
[http://www.flickr.com/photos/swordscookie] Weren’t these photos so heavily staged that you did not get to choose where you sat?

  18. Niall McAuley
    Niall McAuley says:

In 1911 census, Prior Park is occupied by John M. Murthy, brewer and transcription error, aged 39. Thomas’s younger brother, maybe?

    ancestry.com suggests:

    Benjamin Murphy
    Eliza Jane Fennell

    Adelaide Mary Murphy
    Amy Isabel Murphy
    George Fennell Murphy
    John Malcolmson Murphy
    Mary Violet Murphy
    Thomas Murphy

Which would make the other sister Mary Violet or Adelaide Mary.

Brilliant work, [http://www.flickr.com/photos/gnmcauley] but very sad about Miss Amy Isabel. Wasn’t expecting that…

  20. Niall McAuley
    Niall McAuley says:

This could be Adelaide Mary, now a Hogan (born in Tipperary) in the 1901 census.

If so, she’s younger than the other two.

[http://www.flickr.com/photos/swordscookie] And even if they weren’t staged, a hatred of big sisters lasting into adulthood is perfectly normal.

Guess would be the older Amy sitting and the back, and the younger Adelaide (if that’s who she is) sitting at the front?

  24. Niall McAuley
    Niall McAuley says:

I think it is more likely that Adelaide, being married in Dublin, is not here, and that this is Mary Violet.

interesting to note that in the census provided by blackpoolbeach, the Murphy’s do not say what religion they are. agnostics maybe??
