Comparing water heater prices is one of the most important things you do before taking the plunge in buying a new water heater. Nowadays, there are water heaters available that are cheap and inexpensive. However, when choosing a water heater, you mustn’t limit yourself to price. You have to consider quality and efficiency. Just by choosing the right water heater, you can actually cut back on a lot of money in the long run.
What should I do first in buying a water heater?
The first step in going about buying a water heater is determining what type of water heater to buy. Today the most common water heaters are either electric or gas-fueled. There are also water heaters that burn oil, kerosene, and propane. Some could even use wood heat or solar panels in order to heat water.
What type of water heater is more affordable?
If you compare the different water heater prices of electric and gas-fueled water heaters, you will see that gas-fueled water heaters are more expensive. A 40 gallon electric water heater can cost you about $319.99 while a 40 gallon gas-fueled water heater can amount up to $419.99.
Do I get an electric water heater then?
Yes, just by looking at that, you might as well be investing into electric water heaters. However, if you look beyond the price tag and see the investment you’ll be making in the long run, you would be reconsidering your decision.
What does that mean?
The Department of Energy performed a study last 2005, and results show that for every million Btus of heat produced, the average dollar cost of natural gas was found to be at $15.13. On the other hand, electricity was found to be a t $27.26. This clearly shows how natural gas is by far the cheapest, most convenient fuel used for water heaters.
Although gas-fueled water heaters can cost you about $100 more than electric water heaters, just think about how much money you will be saving in the long run by using natural gas fuel.
What can I do if I still like to purchase an electric water heater?
If for some reason, having an electric water heater appeals to you more, you can still enjoy it and at the same time take advantage of the economy of using a gas-fueled water heater. There are products available that allow you to do just that. This works by removing the electric heating element in your water heater, turning it into a storage tank. A new gas-fired heating unit is then attached to the existing water tank using two inch water lines. With this system, you can experience three times the heating capacity of a standard electric water heater.
So if you plan to buy a water heater in the near future, do more than just compare water heater prices. Do some research on what type of water heater is suited to your needs and your budget. There are several brands available that offer affordable water heaters, but always keep in mind to look beyond the price tag and assess quality, efficiency, and energy consumption rate.
