Increase Your View By A Few Thousand Miles

by Stewart M. Russell

The internet has brought forth a wealth of exciting technologies and developments, but in my opinion, one of the most incredible has to be the humble web camera. Usually abbreviated to web cam, these small devices which can cost about the same as a mouse, are capable of broadcasting quite good quality images or video across the internet for anyone interested to see. We don’t need to rely on photographs or the printed word to understand what a country looks like, or what it’s weather is like - within a few seconds I can be looking at a live video image of almost anywhere in the world I have an interest in.

For those people who are pursuing the idea of investing overseas, there are a number of problems to face, most significantly of course is the country they choose to invest in. Although many people jump straight in to the more well known locations, including Spain, because they have been there on holiday themselves, or it is considered a safe bet, an increasing number are looking at less well known countries which are starting to look much more attractive offers. However, a glance through the smart websites and professional pamphlets will make you doubt the wonder that’s advertised, since the photos are professionally taken, and may have been ‘tarted up’ a little, or taken on a particularly scorching day.

Overseas investors may seem to flit their attention from one country to another, from one continent to another, and the world suddenly seems a very small place indeed. Even those people who plan to go on holiday no longer seem as content with traditional resorts but instead turn their attention to little known locations that are less populated. We live in a world that is shrinking as a result of global technology, global business, cheap travel and online booking arrangements. We hardly have to leave the house to organise a trip to the other side of the world, yet there are still the miles to consider, and visiting several countries is still going to take time.

This of course is where web cams come into their own, and provide a wonderful alternative to travelling thousands of miles just to see a place for yourself. Whether you are looking at investing in property in a particular location, or going on holiday there, being able to watch a live video from that location means that you can see for yourself what it’s really like, and not just rely on leaflets and pictures which may have been spruced up a bit.

Of course, for those who look out of their window, either in the cold, grey climate of home, or from an office window out across the miles of freedom, being able to click quickly through a live web cam provides an opportunity to enjoy the glorious summer sun and happy climate of either an exotic locations somewhere in the world, or the very same view that they saw when on holiday - or even the view from their own property abroad!

Web cams offer another very real advantage for those who have purchased property abroad and are planning to let it out for at least some of the time. Your customers may well be delighted with the wonderful photographs you can show them, but as with anyone, they may have doubts as to what it really is like. If you have a web cam, or access to a web cam that’s based nearby, you can simply allow your potential residents to check it out, and see exactly what the place and the climate is like, at any time of the day or night.

Yet another advantage, if you have a property abroad, is of course the aspect of security. Having a web cam that actually overlooks your property allows you to keep an eye on it at any time, and most cameras come with the option to take video only when movement is detected. Having internal web cams allows you to shows potential customers what the property is like, and allows you to keep an eye on the place when you’re away. Obviously you would have an issue with privacy, since residents would not like the idea of you spying on them - so these would have to be removed during occupation.

I never cease to be amazed that whilst I can look through my window and admire dull, overcast and dreary skies, I can glance down at my computer screen and watch the tranquil blue waves roll their way across my screen onto endless miles of golden sand in Javea, with a blue sky punctured only by a solitary purple mountain peak. With virtual tours and live video from anywhere in the world, I can’t even begin to image what the future may hold.
