Barcode Scanners for Your Business
Barcode scanners are nothing new to those who regularly visit various stores such as the grocery and the video rental store. They are used to calculate the purchase total and by using barcode scanners, businesses are better able to keep track of how their inventory moves.
As the name suggests, barcode scanners are for reading barcode labels. Made up of a bars and spaces combination, the barcode’s purpose is to provide a reference number for each item. So, barcodes don’t carry a lot of coded information. By scanning a barcode, the computer recognizes it as a particular item in the store’s inventory and displays the record related to it.
A barcode scanner consists of four sections - the light source, lens, decoder and photoconductor. When the barcode is held directly in front of the lens and light source, the dark bars absorb the light and reflect it via the white spaces. Then it’s the photoconductor’s turn to translate the provided information into a digital signal and the decoder takes over and interprets it into a computer-understandable format.
The two most common types of barcode scanners are CCD scanners and laser scanners. Each has benefits and disadvantages. The CCD barcode scanner, for instance, has no moving parts and is less vulnerable to the wear and tear that affects laser scanners. The laser barcode scanner, on the other hand, can read barcodes from a greater distance than the CCD and is ideal for warehouse situations where employees might have to scan products out of their physical reach.
Depending on the specific features available, a barcode scanner can cost anything between hundred and several thousand dollars. Various websites provide price comparisons and product reviews on different barcode scanners. Whether you are a small business owner or successfully operate a corporation, integrating barcode technology into your business activities can help you with efficient inventory and digital data management.
