This is *the* watch for the runner who doesn’t need all the extras … I own the , a GPS sports watch that has set the standard as to what this type of watch should do. I also own the as well as the . There are a lot of watches out there, but the Magellan Echo is the first to work with the Wahoo Fitness app. It also will work with Strava, MapMyRun, and iSmoothRun. It’s compatible with iPhone 4S, 5, 5C, 5S, iPod touch (5th generation), iPad mini, iPad (3rd through 4th generation), but apparently they are now working on one for the Android. Below I’ve listed some comparisons I’m hoping will help everyone with their purchase decisions, but in my estimation, if you are simply a runner, the Megellan Echo is probably the one you’ll want.As with all these watches, when you have a cold start it’s going to take a minute or more for satellite connection (with your phone or iPad in the case of the Echo), but a warm start will get you up and running very quickly. There are a few differences between the watches, but you’ll really have to take a close look to determine your needs. I know when I purchased the Garmin laying out that kind of money was an actual investment. The Garmin can be immersed in water while the Magellan Echo is only splash and water resistant, but then again that Garmin seal failed. Garmin did make good on their warranty, but it was a hassle. If you’re training for the Spartan Beast and are immersing yourself in a river to challenge yourself you might opt for the Timex Ironman or the Garmin, but if you are a marathoner or simply like to run, the Echo might just be your watch of choice. The Runtastic has a compass and the Garmin doesn’t, but if your are running with your phone and have the Echo you can download Compass° from iTunes. Planning on working on your survivalist tactics, you might want the Runtastic if you’re heading out into unknown terrain or take along your phone. Bikers will be thrilled to note that the Runtastic comes with bike support. If you’re into knocking yourself out trying to compete with the elite athletes, take a look at the Ironman or the Garmin. One nice thing is that if you are unfamiliar with how to set up this type of watch you can go to the Echo site, put this watch in the search, and you’ll be able to watch a video that will assist you in the setup. The packaging is minimal and there is only a laminated piece of paper with a QR code directing you to the website for further instruction. The best thing of course is that you can see your run in “real” time and can listen to your music. Right now the available apps are Strava, MapMyRun, Wahoo Fitness, iSmoothRun.Once you are through with you run you can simply use the watch to tell time if you’d like, but I think its rather clunky for that. It measures 1.8” (W) x 1.9” (W) x 0.5” (D) and the band is 1” wide. It weighs 1.55 ounce and the rubberized surface can be easily wiped down. The final verdict is if you run on a daily basis and don’t have any elite races in mind like the Spartan, this is probably the watch you’ll want.SPECIAL FEATURES:FEATURES:► iPhone 4s and Newer Compatible► Displays real-time data from fitness apps► Remote control for fitness apps and music► Ultra low power, does not need to be recharged► Designed for sports, ruggedized, water-resistant► Everyday watch with customizable displaysCOMPATIBILITY:Apple: iPhone 4S, 5, 5C, 5S, iPod touch (5th generation), iPad mini, iPad (3rd through 4th generation)CHARGING:The Garmin, Runtastic, and Timex can be charged by plugging a USB cable into an AC adapter and plugging into a wall outlet.
