Works, but certainly not “fast”; here are some comparison numbers Full disclosure: I received this item for free in return for a review.I tried a “pocket chainsaw” product like this one a few years ago, and ended up throwing it in the trash. It was too painfully slow for me to imagine ever using it. Even in an emergency situation, I would have been better off trying to gnaw through a piece of wood with my teeth. This item is much better; the main difference being that it cuts a narrower kerf than the similar saw that I tried. Still, this saw certainly isn’t for everyday use. I’d recommend it only for situations where — for whatever reason — you can’t use some other kind of saw.To test this saw out, I timed myself cutting through a maple stump that was 2-3/4″ in diameter. This took me about 3 minutes. Then I cut through the same stump with a bow saw. That took about 1 minute. Not only did the pocket saw take three times as long, it took much more “effort per minute.” That is, 5 minutes of using the pocket saw would be a lot more strenuous than 5 minutes of using a regular hand saw. You may have heard the expression “let the saw do the work,” meaning to use a light hand while sawing rather than bearing down. You don’t have that option with this saw; it takes a goodly amount of effort to move the thing at all.In addition to the time and elbow grease needed to cut with this pocket saw, there’s the fact that the saw itself requires both hands to use. You can’t brace the thing you’re cutting with one hand and saw with the other, so it’s only usable where the wood you’re cutting is (or can be made) completely stationary. But of course this saw isn’t meant to replace an ordinary saw (contrary to the hype on the description page); it’s mainly for use in situations where you need a saw that will fit into a pocket-sized space, probably for emergency use only. You could conceivably use it for cutting firewood while camping, but I think you’d end up getting a lot more warmth from the effort of cutting a few branches than you’d get from burning the resulting firewood.

Handy tool for camping, emergency vehicle kits and Preppers I was asked to review this product and after having it and testing it out for about a month, my conclusion is that it’s a pretty cool tool, a really good value and handy to have. This is geared for those situations where you need something lightweight and portable and that only needs itself and your energy to work, not fuel, not power. It cut through limbs without much effort, is very portable since it is lightweight and doesn’t take up much space.I think it would be a fun gift for a Prepper and a good addition to a camping or emergency kit in the vehicles.
